Oriental city*. And the coloured gemstone capital of the world.
While I registered my SJW Gems business in Hong Kong (mistake, too much to go into here), I ran it from Bangkok, which I thought was a good idea then, and turned out to be a great decision. There is just no better place to make contacts, find suppliers, and buy stones.
From Charoen Krung Road, along Silom Road, a block south to Sathorn and two blocks east to Si Phraya there are any number of gemstone shops, wholesalers, gem cutters, jewelry makers, goldsmiths and silversmiths. While Bangkok silversmiths are considered among the best artisans in the world, the skill and knowledge built up over centuries of cutting corundum is where the area established its reputation.
*I did not know Tim Rice had a writing credit on that song.
